Mothers Day Corsage
Lilac

The sweet scent of lilacs instantly transports me to Mother’s Day in the 1960s, when our neighbors’ long row of blooming lilac bushes signaled the arrival of this special occasion. Every year, I’d carefully cut the lilacs, pair them with a touch of greenery from the bushes, and fashion them into little gifts with a ribbon and a safety pin. These heartfelt creations, though quick to wilt and slump, were treasured by my Mom, Aunt Judy, and Grandma, who wore them proudly, no matter their condition. The fragrance of lilacs brings back the warmth of those moments—spending Mother’s Day with these extraordinary women, cherishing their love and the joy of being together. This scent will forever be tied to that treasured tradition and the remarkable women who made it so meaningful.
